Columbusís Early Life

Christopher Columbus caught his first glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean working as a sailor aboard commercial vessels. Little did he know it would lead him to a journey that would make his a well-known name around the world and through the ages. Columbus was probably born in Genoa , Italy , although his exact birthplace is unknown. He spent his youth learning cartography (mapmaking) and sailing. He worked as a sailor aboard commercial vessels, and then worked for a time as a mapmaker and bookseller with his brother, Bartolomeo. By the year 1477, he was living in Lisbon , Portugal , and eventually joined up with the Portuguese merchant fleet. He married a wealthy young Portuguese woman, and as part of her dowry he acquired charts of Portuguese holdings in the Atlantic .
